Northern Exposure Cabin - Ely, MN

Nestled into the south shore of Lake Shagawa, this log-built cabin was designed to host extended family gatherings, just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Designing around the squared-log building system was a fun challenge, and set-up the basic dimensions of the home. We created separate living and sleeping wings, connected by a link that houses the entry area and screen porch. The staggered volumes respond to the topography of the site and orient the cabin perfectly towards the prime lake views. Designed to accommodate up to 18 people, the sleeping wing hosts 3 bedrooms, a bunk room, plus a separate lounge area facing the lake. We used a modern spin on traditional cabin detailing to create a balance between old and new that will last for generations.
